August Casting Program

August’s Casting Clinic will be held 9 AM – 12 PM, Saturday, August 7th. We will be on the Arkansas River. We’ll meet at the River Station in Canon City. Take 115 to Hwy 50, head west to Canon City. Drive through town and turn left at 3rd street light. Go under bridge. Meet by the Riverwalk.

Theme will be “Dealing with River Conditions”

The class will teach you how to achieve better line control to deal with drag and wind. We will go through different presentation casts, mends, and change of direction (including an introduction to Single hand Spey casting). We will address dealing with tough situations we find here in the Rock Mountains and elsewhere, such as casting in the wind, across current differentials, with bushes behind you, etc.  We will cover casting upstream, across stream, and downstream. The class will be split between demonstrations and practice time. For this class, it will help to have a decent casting stroke and be able to form good loops (Practice!). Everyone will be able to learn some good tips whether you are a beginner or advanced caster.

Be sure to bring drinking water, sunscreen, and sunglasses (to protect eyes from sun glare and errant flies.) Bring 5 or 6 dollars in case there is a parking fee. Expect to wet wade or bring waders. Bring at least one rod, line, and leader. You can bring a second rod rigged for nymphing (optional). You might want to bring a lunch, especially if you plan to stay and fish.
